This fortress is a well-known structure, having appeared in many films and photos. It has been home to bishops, kings and colonels and the original building is said to have had an extensive curtained wall, which connected seven towers, spanning the entire island that it was built on. During the 1700s, a Jacobite uprising partially damaged the structure and for the next two hundred years, it was left in ruins. However, Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the fortress and restored it to its former glory. Travel to this magnificent castle in your very own camper van and on the way, take in the mysterious Scottish wildlife.
The network of several passages and chambers, known collectively as Gilmerton Cove, seems to have no purpose other than baffling historians. The entrance to this mysterious site was believed to have been a blacksmith's residence, which leads the way to a number of theories, one of them being that it was a hideout for religious refugees. The hand-carved caves are a great place for any historic detective to explore and try and figure out the mystery behind it all. As it's just outside Edinburgh, you can take the camper van to the white cottage which is the entrance and park it nearby.
Named after the character in 'Midsummer Night's Dream', Puck's Glen is full of bubbling ponds, enchanting waterfalls and moss-covered dripping walls, all soundtracked by birdsong. If you're a keen photographer wanting to get that perfect shot, be careful as the muddy terrain can be tricky. The car park is free so you'll have no problem with parking the camper van.
